Best Underwater Cameras
& Action Cams for Water Sports (2026)
Updated April 2026 · 7 min read · rendezblu.com
Everything happens in the water. The waves, the dolphins, the underwater moments that nobody on shore believes actually happened. The right action camera captures all of it without you thinking about it — mounted, waterproof, automatic. Here are the best options for water sports in 2026.
1. GoPro Hero 13 Black — Best Overall
// top pick
GoPro Hero 13 Black
10m waterproof, HDR video, HyperSmooth 7.0 stabilization — the benchmark action cam
10m waterproof (no housing)5.3K60 videoHyperSmooth 7.0HDR videoMagnetic accessories
The GoPro Hero 13 is the benchmark that all other action cameras are measured against. 10-meter waterproof without a housing — just click it onto your mount and get in the water. 5.3K60 video with HDR captures surfing and SUP footage with color and detail that was impossible five years ago. HyperSmooth 7.0 stabilization is so effective that handheld footage looks gimbal-stabilized. The magnetic accessory ecosystem means mounts, handles, and accessories all click together without tools. Battery life is the only weakness — bring a spare for all-day sessions.

// 360° pick
Insta360 X4
10m waterproof, 8K 360° video — capture everything and pick your angle in post
10m waterproof8K 360° videoInvisible selfie stick effectAI-powered editingActive HDR
The Insta360 X4 changes how you capture water sports entirely. Instead of picking a camera angle before your session, you capture everything in 360° and choose your frame in post. The invisible selfie stick effect means your arm holding the camera disappears from the footage — you look like you're flying through the air alone. 10-meter waterproof without a housing. 8K 360° resolution gives you plenty to work with in post. For content creators who want dramatic angles from a single clip, there's nothing better.

// video quality pick
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
Largest sensor in the category, best low-light, 10m waterproof — for filmmakers
10m waterproofLargest action cam sensorBest-in-class low light4K 120fps slow motionAll-day battery life
DJI entered the action cam market and immediately pushed GoPro on sensor quality. The Osmo Action 5 Pro has the largest sensor in the action cam category — which translates to dramatically better low-light performance for dawn surf sessions and twilight paddles. 4K 120fps slow motion captures wave riding and water drops in cinematic detail. All-day battery life is a genuine differentiator from GoPro. 10-meter waterproof without housing. For people who prioritize video quality over ecosystem compatibility, the DJI is the choice.

// value pick
GoPro Hero 12 Black
Everything the Hero 13 does, minus the newest stabilization — at a lower price
10m waterproof5.3K60 videoHyperSmooth 6.0Longest GoPro battery everSame accessory ecosystem
The Hero 12 is the previous generation GoPro — which means it's a genuinely excellent camera at a reduced price now that the 13 is out. Same 10m waterproofing, same 5.3K resolution, same magnetic accessory ecosystem. HyperSmooth 6.0 (vs 7.0 in the 13) is still exceptional stabilization. The Hero 12 had the longest battery life of any GoPro at launch. If you don't need the absolute latest stabilization and want to save $100, the Hero 12 is the value pick of the lineup.

Native waterproofing vs housing. Modern GoPro, Insta360, and DJI cameras are natively waterproof to 10m without a housing. Older cameras require a waterproof housing that adds bulk and can fog up. Always check the native waterproofing spec before buying.
Mounts make or break water sports footage. The camera is only as good as the mount. Chest mounts for SUP and surfing, jaw/chin mounts for helmets, board mounts for underwater perspective. GoPro's magnetic mount ecosystem is the most versatile. Invest in good mounts.
Stabilization matters more than resolution. A 5.3K clip with poor stabilization is worse than a 4K clip with excellent stabilization. HyperSmooth 7.0 and DJI's RockSteady are both excellent. Prioritize stabilization spec over raw resolution numbers.
Bring extra batteries. Action cams drain fast in cold water. A session in 55°F water will drain a battery in 45–60 minutes. Always bring at least one spare battery and a waterproof charging case.
Our bottom line
For most water sports content creators, the GoPro Hero 13 is the right call — the ecosystem, stabilization, and brand reliability are hard to beat. For 360° content and creative angles, the Insta360 X4 produces genuinely cinematic results that the standard GoPros can't match. Best video quality in the category? DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. Best value? GoPro Hero 12 at the reduced price.
