Flyboard & Hydroflight:
The Complete Gear Guide (2026)
Updated April 2026 · 7 min read · rendezblu.com
Strapping water-jet boots to your feet and launching 30 feet in the air is exactly as insane as it sounds. Flyboarding is the most visceral water sport on the planet — and thanks to Zapata Racing, the gear is now refined enough for serious recreational riders. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Zapata Flyboard Pro Series — Best Overall
// top pick
Zapata Flyboard Pro Series
The 4th generation — 30% lighter, carbon fiber construction, independent twisting foot pads
Carbon fiber + plastic injection30% lighter than V3Independent twisting foot padsAdjustable nozzlesConnects to any PWC
Franky Zapata invented the flyboard in 2012 and the Pro Series is the most refined version yet. Carbon fiber and plastic injection construction dropped the weight by 30% compared to the previous generation — which matters when you're hanging 20 feet in the air on water jets. Independent twisting foot pads let you adjust the rotation angle to your experience level and comfort. Adjustable nozzles optimize compatibility with different personal watercraft. The result is a setup that beginners can learn on in minutes and experts can use for complex freestyle routines.

2. Zapata Flyboard Legend — Best for Beginners
// beginner pick
Zapata Flyboard Legend
The original design with a turbine interface — most widely used flyboard in the world

The Flyboard Legend is the most widely used flyboard in the world — you've likely seen it in every viral water sports video from the last decade. The turbine interface with Venturi water evacuation is more efficient than the Pro at long distances and provides a slightly more stable learning experience for first-timers. The bindings are flexible and specifically designed for Flyboard use, offering ankle protection without restricting movement. Most Flyboard rental operations worldwide run the Legend — if you've tried one on vacation, this is what you flew on.

3. Hoverboard by ZR — Best for Board Sport Lovers
// surfer's pick
Hoverboard by ZR (Zapata Racing)
Horizontal flight experience — surf the sky at up to 13mph
Horizontal flightUp to 13mphBoard sport feelDual Swivel SystemPWC-powered
Where the Flyboard launches you vertically above the water, the Hoverboard gives you a horizontal surfing-the-sky experience. It's designed specifically for people who love board sports — the feel is closer to snowboarding or surfing than it is to flying. Speed up to 13mph, hop wakes, and go airborne through water propulsion. Zapata's Dual Swivel System minimizes hose kinks during freestyle routines. If you're more Silver Surfer than Iron Man, this is your board.

4. Jetpack by ZR — Most Unique Experience
// most unique
Jetpack by ZR (Zapata Racing)
50% lighter than most jetpacks — seated flight experience, hands-free control

The Jetpack by ZR turns your jet ski into a flying water jetpack — and it's 50% lighter than most jetpack systems on the market. The seated flight option means you can cruise the sky in a relaxed position rather than standing. Rotation system with specific bearings handles the torsion forces smoothly. The quick clip interface makes switching between the Flyboard and Jetpack fast and tool-free. For group sessions where different riders want different experiences, the Flyboard Pro + Jetpack bundle is the move.

How to choose
You need a personal watercraft (PWC). Flyboards don't come with a jet ski — they attach to one. You either own a PWC or rent access to one. Most flyboard operators at tourist destinations include the PWC in the package price.
Start with a lesson. Every serious flyboard vendor offers instruction. Your first session on a flyboard will involve falling — a lot. With good instruction you'll be hovering in 20–30 minutes. Without it, the learning curve is significantly longer and more painful.
The PWC operator controls your power. In the standard setup, the person on the jet ski controls the throttle — they control how high and fast you go. A wireless remote upgrade lets you control your own throttle, which is significantly more fun once you're comfortable.
Gear up properly. Wetsuit or impact vest, helmet, and a leash are non-negotiable for flyboarding. The falls happen fast and from height. Protect yourself.
Our bottom line
For most people the Flyboard Pro Series is the right purchase — the weight reduction and independent foot pads are real upgrades over the Legend. If you're more of a surfer at heart, the Hoverboard gives you a horizontal experience that's completely different from the vertical flight of the Flyboard. Either way, take a lesson first. Seriously.
